The Barbecue Cook-Off

KCBS Representatives: Harvey Hamrick, Ron Harwell, and Ed Magnusson

Grand Champion: Lotta Bull and Reserve Champ: buttrub.com

70 plus barbecue teams from all over the East Coast are expected to compete again this year. We are sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, and KCBS rules will be followed in choosing our winners and Grand Champion.

The competition begins with an "Anything But BBQ" contest with teams submitting their specialties such as turtle stew, pineapple upside-down-cake and Texas caviar. The actual categories change every year. In the past we have had categories for wild game, desserts, gumbo or stew, fowl, non-alcoholic beverages and, even one year, livermush (a local treat). More questions can be answered in the "Anything But" section of our Freqently Asked Questions page.

You can also view our 2006 competition slideshow of the competitors, cookers, and all things related to barbecue competition.

Then comes the serious competition with the standard KCBS categories of Poultry, Ribs, Pork, and Brisket -- as well as best BBQ Sauce. An oak door trophy goes to each 1st place winner and cash prizes will be awarded through 10th place in the KCBS categories. The 1st place winner in sauce gets cash and a custom plaque.

We also have a Best Booth contest for teams to win cash and a trophy for the best booth presentation. In the past the public has been treated to such sights as a water wheel complete with pond surrounded with flowers or a ferris wheel with pigs in each seat.

The arsenal of cookers is one of the top interests at the Hog Happnin'. Every type cooker, from a homemade "oil drum" cooker to a custom built pit, can be seen.

$20,000.00 in Cash and Prizes!
